So you want to breed to an Andalusian?
SO YOU WANT TO BREED TO AN ANDALUSIAN. WHAT WILL YOU GET?
The glorious Andalusian! You've seen the ads.......you've watched them perform at the Lippizan shows......you've dreamed of owning one......you've even whispered in your mare's ear about how she'd feel about being bred to one......but you've always wondered what you would get.
You are not alone. It is hard to walk away untouched from your first encounter with an Andalusian. As Andalusian owners, every one of us has been there and the horses you now see standing before you are - in most cases - the result of many years of dreaming, obsessing, hoping, planning, and saving. But most of us started with a Half-Andalusian.
The Half-Andalusian
Half-Andalusians are enjoying a huge increase in popularity in the United States, for obvious reasons. The Andalusian is the result of thousands of years of selective breeding, creating a very powerful gene pool. In most cases, the Andalusian traits show very heavily in Andalusian crosses, with many Half-Andalusians looking nearly identical to their purebred cousins. The Andalusian horse brings beauty, strength, exceptional
movement, excellent temperament, a solid foundation of dense bone and iron-like hooves, and of course, the trademark luxurious mane and tail into nearly every combination. In addition, the Andalusian has been successfully and consistently crossed with many breeds, resulting in the creation of newly recognized breeds and Registries.
Your Half-Andalusian foal could be eligible for one or more of the registries found below:
The International Andalusian and Lusitano Horse Association has a Half-Andalusian Registry, and offers Half-Andalusian classes at all International Andalusian & Lusitano Assoc.(IALHA) sanctioned shows, including the U.S. Nationals. ALL HALF-ANDALUSIANS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS REGISTRY. Their website can be found at http://www.ialha.org, Ph. # 205- 995-8900
When crossed with the Quarter Horse or Paint, the resulting foal may be registered Half-Andalusian and as an American Azteca. The American Azteca horse is astounding. A horse with speed, heart, stamina, grace and an outstanding disposition and ability to learn. This breed is the National Horse of Mexico. You may contact: The American Azteca Horse International Assoc. Their website can be found at http://www.americanazteca.com Ph.# 605-342-2322.
The Andalusian has crossed successfully with the Arabian horse as well, creating an Hispano-Arabe. The Hispano-Arabe registry has a website at http://www.hispano-arabe.com. In addition, Arabian crosses can usually be registered as Half- Arabian, enabling them to show at all International Arabian Horse Association (IAHA) sanctioned shows. The Spanish Norman also has it's own Registry, and can be cross-registered as a Half-Andalusian. Their website can be found at http://www.spanish-norman.com Ph.# 203-266-4048. Our stallion Sonador is nominated.
The Andalusian / Morgan cross also results in an outstanding foal, and can be registered as a Half-Andalusian and an Iberian Warmblood, among others.
When crossed with a Thoroughbred, the resulting offspring may be registered as a Half-Andalusian and an Iberian Warmblood.
