About Us
How many times did I ask Mom and Dad for a horse? Well, if you are as addicted to them as much as I am, it was all the time.
In 1973 my dream came true. As a graduation gift from high school, I was given “King”, a grade paint, as a gift. I had the rare fortune to

love and enjoy him until 1999 at the age of 38. He taught me so much about myself. He had wonderful ears to listen , and a heart of gold. He was the “King of my heart."
My love for horses led me down many paths. In the late 70’s, in the urban cowboy era, I did a lot of showing in the WSCA and AQHA realm. Along with working, training, and showing my horses, I also worked for some private farms in Florida. As time would have it, my interest changed to dressage. We owned some beautiful AQHA mares and I was looking to breed for dressage. I read an article in Equus Magazine on the Azteca (Andalusian X AQHA) and my interest took a new direction. We bred our AQHA mare to an Andalusian and purchased an Azteca mare DW Ladina (the first in our state). As we grew to love our Aztecas, we also grew to love the Andalusian breed.
That was in 1991 and today we have 6 purebred Andalusians on the farm, along with a few Aztecas. It has been a great journey and one we hope will continue to grew and enjoy.
Among many of my duties, I am a Mom, a wife, an in-home daycare provider, and the registrar for the American Azteca Horse Int'l Assoc. (AAHIA). Kevin, my husband, is my right hand man. He does building maintenance to pay the bills. However, he truck in hay, picks up grain from the mill, builds fences, and barns. Helps with the breeding and foaling. He has been a huge support in this endeavor and my dream. I am truly blessed!
As a breeding farm, we know that we possess both a legend and a dream. The Andalusian carries a mystique and an innate sense of history and art, which we do not take lightly. To ensure quality we have kept our breeding stock small. We feel that quality, not quantity, is the best way to go. Because of this, we can offer our foals, mares and stallion the highest caliber of feed & care. Along with worming, vaccinations and farrier care. They are handled daily with love.
Due to our high standard K-J Hollow Andalusian Facility has been approved as a Certified Stable by the Minnesota Horse Council.
The essay below came across the world wide web one day to me. It spoke to me on so many levels I just had to put it on my web site. Any horse lover would understand whether they have loved horses for one day or a life time like me... what "just a horse" is all about.
Just a Horse
Author Unknown
From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a horse,"
or, " that's a lot of money for just a horse".
They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs
involved for "just a horse." Some of my proudest moments have come about
with "just a horse."
Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a horse," but I did not
once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by
"just a horse," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a
horse" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it's "just a horse," then you will probably understand
phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."
Just a horse" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and
pure unbridled joy.
"Just a horse" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better
person. Because of "just a horse" I will rise early, take long walks and
look longingly to the future.
So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a horse" but an embodiment of
all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and
the pure joy of the moment.
"Just a horse" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away
from myself and the worries of the day.
I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a horse" but the
thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a woman/man."
So the next time you hear the phrase "just a horse" just smile, because they
"just" don't understand.
God Bless,
Joyce Firkus
